During the 18th and 19th century it was common to make death masks. They were used for various reasons. Sometimes when human remains were unknown, therefore masks were useful for identification.

On other times for the sake of piece of history.Some painters have also used death masks for painting famous historical figures. As they do offer a dimensional view of a human face. These days the closest thing to it could be 3D ashes urns, shaped after the person who passed away. You can see an example photo here below.
