Photos Full of Love and Sorrow

In the Netherlands the Funeral museum “Tot Zover” has a new exhibition about Post Mortem photos, taken of the deceased. The museum also calls out for everyone to send in their own photos.

Photos of after death are usually intended for private use and you see them rarely in museums. In the exhibition there are photos taken by Freckers, his death portraits collection is the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

Most of the photos from this unique collection from the period 1860-1920. Two-thirds consists of photographs of children. Infant mortality was high and often this was the only picture they had of the child. They are exceptional photographs that give a glimpse into the inner life of our ancestors.
The exhibition is open until 10th of April 2016. For more information visit the museum website
