Summary of the first international thanatopraxy worksop in Barcelona

The first edition of the International Tanatopraxia Workshop was organized from 10th till 13th of October 2023 in Barcelona (Spain) with the participation of professionals from China, Poland, Croatia, Mexico, Spain, Italy and United Kingdom. This groundbreaking event, the very first of its kind, is proudly part of the FIAT-IFTA Global Education Program and has been organized by Sortem, in close collaboration with FIAT-IFTA and Āltima.

Our esteemed trainers for this course included: Lucrezia Pecorella from the United Kingdom, Marco Caraffini from Italy, and Anwar El Amrani González from Spain and our great thanatopraxy professonals attending in the training was: Javier Navas Hernández from Spain, Jorge Figueroa from Mexico, Moran Sapanjoš from Croatia, Ning Wen Yang from China and Szymon Sokołowski from Poland.

The Barcelona workshop covered an extensive range of advanced embalming techniques, encompassing both external and internal practices. From fundamental aspects like washing and sanitary disinfection to more intricate procedures such as injection, drainage, and instrument handling, participants will gain proficiency in every facet of the embalming process. The practical approached, combined with the expertise of our trainers, guarantees an enriching and rewarding learning experience. And to top it off, participants received the certificate of competence upon completion!

We ask all of the participants of the first edition of the International Tanatopraxia Workshop two questions: How do they find the training? What is one of the most important things they are taking with them after the training?

Above all, participants appreciated the excellent atmosphere of the meeting, the opportunity to learn about new techniques and products, learn by doing and share experience among professionals from different countries and cultures. As Jorge Figueroa from Mexico said, "The participants came from different countries and continents, each of us speaking a different native language. We wondered what could be a common language for all of us, and we came to the conclusion that this language for us is the behavior of the body, which we take care with as thanatopraxis."
